Terbutaline

Synonyms: Bricanyl, Brethaire, Brethine

Terbutaline produces bronchodilation by stimulation of the B2 adrenergic receptors in bronchial smooth muscle, thereby causing relaxation of muscle fibres. This action is manifested by an increase in pulmonary function as demonstrated by FEV1 measurements. Terbutaline also produces a decrease in airway and pulmonary resistance.

Indications:

For the symptomatic relief of bronchial asthma and for relief of reversible bronchospasm which may occur in association with bronchitis and emphysema.

How to take:

Adult and children over 15 years of age: 5mg 3 times daily, not to exceed 15mg in 24 hour basis. If disturbing side effects are observed, reduce dosage to 2,5mg 3 times daily without loss of beneficial effects,. Children 12-15 years of age: 2,5mg 3 times daily, not to 7,5mg in 24 hour basis. Precautions:

Do not violate instructions. Take with meals to minimize GI upset. Report adverse effects. Increase fluid intake to liquefy secretion.
